After exchanging nuptials in September of 2009, Zoey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard, the front man in the band Death Cab for Cutie, officially finalized their California divorce.
The couple reportedly separated on Halloween in 2011 and filed paperwork for their divorce on December 27. In their paperwork, the reason for their divorced was cited as irreconcilable differences. They each waived their rights to receive spousal support in California following the divorce. The couple did not have any children so there were no battles for California child support either.
A statement from the couple said that the separation was “mutual and amicable,” showing no hard feelings or negativity toward the other person.
Although divorce in San Francisco, Los Angeles or anywhere is never easy to go through, Deschanel and Gibbard have shown their respect for one another by not engaging in negative commentary in public about either person. In fact, neither Deschanel nor Gibbard have discussed their separation very much in public. Prior to the breakup however, Gibbard had been very open about his love for his wife. Only a few months before calling it quits, Gibbard opened up to a magazine about the excitement he felt the first time he met Deschanel.
Now that the California separation and divorce have been finalized and both parties have come to an agreement on the terms of the divorce, Deschanel and Gibbard are moving forward without each other. Deschanel reportedly has a new man in her life: screenwriter, Jamie Linden.
We wish both Deschanel and Gibbard the best as they move past this difficult period in their lives.
